End-of-life computer reuse scheme

What is it

The UNSW operates an end-of-life Computer Reuse Scheme as a joint program between the UNSW Environment Unit and the UNSW Equity and Diversity Unit.

UNSW academic and operational units can donate functional computers and computer peripherals (printers, copiers etc.) that are in good working order and are surplus to UNSW operational needs. These computers are reformatted and made available to financially disadvantaged members of the community and UNSW students, thereby achieving environmental and social responsibility objectives.

How to donate functional computers

A stepwise procedure for donating computers is provided below, but please note – we want ONLY complete, adequate or functional computer equipment and peripherals. Donation of junk undermines the program by unnecessarily increasing costs. Non-functioning electronic equipment should be recycled via the UNSW e-waste Scheme.

  • Get approval from your manager to donate the computer.
  • Ensure the computer meets the minimum criteria for reuse:
    • Computer hardware must be in safe and good working order,
    • No older than year 2000,
    • For PCs - minimum Pentium III (or equivalent); for Macintosh – there is no minimum CPU specification,
    • Sensitive information has been deleted from hard drive,
    • Please include any cables, drivers and components/peripherals.
  • Download the Declaration Form, complete this form and tape it to the computer for identification and collection. Please note that items will not be collected or accepted without a completed declaration form.
  • If the items have a UNSW bar code and are on the UNSW Asset Register, complete and submit a Notification of Equipment/Asset Sold, Donated or Traded-In form. Note the disposal code “CRS” for donation to the UNSW Computer Reuse Program” in the item description.
  • Contact to arrange collection or drop off of the computer.

How financially disadvantaged students can obtain a free computer:
Donated computers are checked, reformatted, installed with basic applications and made available to charitable organisations (through Wesley Uniting Mission), with a proportion of the computers being available for disadvantaged UNSW students through the UNSW Equity and Diversity Unit.

What is UNSW doing to minimise environmental impacts
By sending surplus computers to the Computer Reuse Scheme we are:

  • Reducing waste sent to landfill.
  • Assisting disadvantaged students to access computers.
  • Reducing the extraction of raw material and the impacts associated with the production and distribution of new computers.
  • This program aims for highest and best value resource recovery by targeting avoidance and reuse options where possible.
  • This program is complemented by the UNSW e-waste recycling scheme, which collects non-functioning electronic equipment and materials for recycling of components and materials.
